Do your fabrics really come from Japan?

Yes, they really do.

Were all your kimono fabrics worn by someone?

Yes, most were worn by someone in Japan and witnessed special occasions such as tea ceremonies, weddings and sometimes even earthquakes. I use vintage kimonos, dating back to the 1970s. and 1980s. Sometimes, however, I order a larger bolt of kimono silk used by kimono makers in Japan to make new kimonos for their customers.

Are your lampshades lined on the inside?

No. The reason traditional lampshades used to be lined in the past was to protect the outer fabric from practically slow-cooking in the heat generated for hours by old type, non-energy-saving light bulbs. With energy saving bulbs lining is no longer necessary.

Do you sell lamp bases to use with lampshades?

At the moment lampshades only are being sold. Some simple bases should be available for sale soon. Please visit this page for updates regularly.

Kimono Lamps will fit any standard lamp base. They are often photographed on Ikea bases available from Ikea stores worldwide.

Do you sell lampshade frames?

Yes. Please contact by email stating order size and frame type:

  • Fuji – h 21 cm x 27 cm dia
  • Osaka – h 23 cm x 32 cm dia
  • Kyoto – h 34.5 cm x 39 cm dia
  • Tokyo – h 45.5 cm x 48 cm dia

Do you restore old lampshades?

Old lampshades can be restored, provided the original fabric hasn’t been removed and depending on condition, shape and size of the old frame.

Because of the specific size of the silk parts Japanese kimonos are sewn with, I can only use kimono fabrics on a frame of up to a certain size and proportion.

Small and medium size lampshade frames are relatively straightforward to restore using kimono fabrics.

If your old frame cannot be reused because it’s too damaged (rusted, bent, etc.), I can suggest and provide a new frame.

If your old frame cannot be reused with kimono fabrics due to its unusual shape, I will advise you to provide a fabric of your choice, suitable for lampshade making.

Lampshade restorations are treated as custom orders and same pricing applies. Click here to find out about custom orders from Kimono Lamps.

Can I provide my own fabric for the lampshade?

You are welcome to provide your own designer fabric.

I will advise you to provide your own fabric when the lampshade frame you’re intending to restore is of unusual shape or size and it’s not possible to cover it with kimono fabric, or if you are looking to order more than 3 lampshades covered with the same fabric.

The fabric has to be suitable for lampshade making.

We regret that the cost of shipping is buyer’s responsibility as the shipping charges are not refundable.

How can I look after my Kimono Lamp?

Start with the right light bulb. Energy saving light bulbs are recommended for all Kimono Lamps to protect kimono fabric from fading and to keep your energy bills down. They don’t overheat and you can preserve the vivid colours of your lampshade as well as keep the delicate silk from deteriorating.

If your lampshade becomes really dusty, try to refresh it with a vacuum cleaner, the nozzle never touching the fabric directly, only close enough to suck in the dust.

Never wet or dampen the fabric even with clean water, as it will leave the stain when dried.

Do you sell wholesale?

Yes.

If you are a shop owner, interior designer or buyer for a larger organisation please contact directly for a wholesale pricelist and trading conditions.
